Collimating the Newtonian Telescope
This image of the Newtonian telescope illustrates the laser collimator used to realign the primary and secondary mirrors. Proper alignment is crucial for optimal performance, as even slight misalignments can significantly affect image quality. After using the laser collimator, a quick star test was conducted to assess the optics. The results showed that the mirrors were now better aligned, ensuring that the telescope is ready for the camera again. This process not only enhances the clarity of celestial images but also improves overall observational experiences.
This image shows the imaging train with the camera, filter drawer and adapter that slots into the focuser. I've temporarily replaced the filter wheel with the filter drawer again so I can access the tilt adjustment screws on the front of the camera. This is a project for the next clear night to see if we can address the sensor tilt and improve the star quality within the images.
The fast focal ratio of the newtonian is very unforgiving with any spacing errors or tilt, especially with the large APS sensor of the ASI 071 MC Pro camera, however despite my ongoing frustrations, it will be worth it to get the scope dialled in as it capable of very quick image acquisition.
